Burning Man Music Festival

What is Burning Man?

What exactly is Burning Man? The Burning Man Festival is one of the most well-known events on the planet, taking place once a year in Black Rock, Nevada, USA. Every year, tens of thousands of people gather to celebrate art and creativity over the course of eight days in August and September in honor of Labor Day.

The first Man is set ablaze on a San Francisco beach in 1986. On the Summer Solstice, Larry Harvey and his friend Jerry James improvise a wooden figure and drag it down to Baker Beach. A curious crowd gathers to watch it burn after they light it up.

Many Burning Man participants are quick to point out that the event is not a music festival. Rather, it is a crowdsourced gathering centered on art, community, and alternative – and many would argue better – ways of being in a society. But, regardless of how you swing your fire spinner, there is a lot of music at Burning Man, with DJs in particular serving as a primary source of entertainment out on the playa.

Burning Man is an annual event held in the western United States at Black Rock City, a temporary city built in the Black Rock Desert of northwest Nevada about 100 miles north-northeast of Reno. The late-summer event is described as a community and art experiment guided by ten guiding principles: radical inclusion, radical self-reliance, radical self-expression, communal effort, civic responsibility, gifting, decommodification, participation, immediacy, and leave no trace.

Participation is a key community precept – selfless giving of one's unique talents for the enjoyment of all is encouraged and actively promoted. Experimental and interactive sculptures, buildings, performances, and art cars, among other media, are examples of these generous outpourings of creativity.

What kind of music is played at Burning Man?

Hip hop, psych rock, soul, jazz, and many other subgenres were clearly not considered conventional at Burning Man, despite the fact that the festival typically combines a variety of sounds.

How do I register for a camp?

Theme camps are established groups of Burning Man participants who come together to provide a service, entertainment, art, or other interactive experience. You are NOT required to attend a theme camp.

Where am I going to camp? Can I bring my RV or make a campsite reservation?

A map of the event is posted on the Burning Man website and announced in the Jackrabbit Speaks email newsletter before the event begins. You'll notice shaded areas reserved for theme camps and event services, which will be marked with blue flags once you arrive at the event.

There are no reserved spaces outside of these shaded areas and blue flags; everything is open camping and available on a first-come, first-served basis. As one might expect, there is more space on the city's outskirts, but all event camping is fairly densely packed. You are permitted to take as much space as you require for your vehicles, shade, and sleeping structures.

VEHICLE PERMITS

  • All vehicles entering Black Rock City must have a current vehicle pass displayed in the windshield. Motorcycles and towed vehicles are not required to have a vehicle pass.

  • Vehicle passes do not permit driving within Black Rock City. When you arrive at your camp, you must park your car for the duration.

  • Vehicle passes will be available at all ticket sales locations, but quantities are limited.

  • In all other sales, vehicle passes must be purchased in conjunction with event tickets, and no more than one vehicle pass per two tickets may be purchased.

  • There will be a limited number of vehicle passes available for $140 each, plus applicable fees.

Is my cell phone going to work at the event? Where can I find the nearest phone?

Cell phones do not function properly at the event. There are no cell towers in the area that can handle the volume of calls required for the population of over 70,000. After that, you should not rely on it for mission-critical communications.

Satellite phones are available at the event, but they are quite expensive. Gerlach has the closest "land-line." If you choose to drive to Gerlach, you must pay a re-entry fee ($20/person), wait in line with other visitors, and have your ticket stub with you. There is no express lane for re-entering private vehicles, so lines can be lengthy.

Is it okay if I bring my pet?

Pets are not permitted at Burning Man. The environment is simply too harsh, and the event contains far too many elements that would be unfamiliar and stressful to animals. If you try to bring an animal in, you will be turned away from the Gate.

Please do not expect to enter the vicinity early. The only people allowed into Burning Man before the event begins are the construction crews. An early entry credential issued by a Burning Man department manager is required. If you arrive too early, you will be turned away.

There are also no camping or parking areas nearby. Reno, a two-hour drive from the event Gate, is the closest option.

What do I need to bring?

Burning Man is unlike any other event you've ever attended. You'll need to do a lot of planning. The event does not have any vendors. As a result, once you arrive in Black Rock City, you will be unable to purchase food or supplies.

You will need to bring everything you need to survive in a sometimes harsh and unpredictable desert environment (water, food, shelter, shade, etc.) for the duration of your stay. You are accountable for your needs and actions.

Every year, you will also receive a wealth of information in the Placement Newsletters.

Civic planning is not for everyone, but participants are encouraged to bring their theme camp regardless of whether they get reserved placement. There is plenty of unreserved space where you can set up shop–just keep it outside our blue Placement flags.

Avoid "land grabbing" if you decide to set up a theme camp in open camping. Land grabbing is claiming a swath of open camping space for all your friends who have yet to arrive. Claiming land with caution tape, cones, stakes, random pieces of equipment, or setting up trailers in a large perimeter, for example, is not permitted! Trailers should not be dropped and left before their occupants arrive.

How should I begin planning my theme camp?

The Camp Resource Guide is jam-packed with information on organizing and running a Theme Camp at Burning Man.

I'd like to establish a village. What should I consider as I begin to plan?

The Purpose of a Village

A village's mission is to provide a public home for other Black Rock City residents. A village's purpose is not simply to gather with friends or to share domestic arrangements. It is to collaborate with your fellow villagers on a project that will bring you into contact with hundreds of other participants. A village, like a theme park or a work of art, is a gift that you give to our city. A village is self-expressive, it helps others, and it should be enjoyable.

What exactly is a village?

The concept of a village arose from the experiences of previous event attendees. Friends camped together, possibly working on a theme camp, and met other camps, deciding to form a group the following year. Strong friendships were formed, future plans and commitments were made, and as a result, these communal groupings flourished over time.

In fact, a village is a microcosm of "community" within the larger macrocosm of Burning Man. The duty of a village citizen has evolved from a communal commitment to a civic commitment: providing gathering areas, assistance, entertainment, and information to those who enter the space. Villages are defined as at least two theme camps with a population of at least 38 people for the purposes of completing a Camp Placement Questionnaire, but can be made up of many other types of camps and spaces.

The village contact/Mayor must gather all of the information required to complete the Placement Questionnaire. You are in charge of the early arrival requests. Art in your village, fire in your village, flammables storage in your village. It is your responsibility to design the village layout.

By forming a village, you develop a close relationship with the larger Burning Man community. Don't be misled by the word "village." A village is not a distant suburb. A village has its own identity, but it also incorporates the city's identity. You are setting the tone for our city by constructing a village. To establish a village is to accept responsibility for creating an environment in which people can live together with the goal of producing something that will benefit the community. To that end, it is a place to maximize everyone's potential at Burning Man.

Organization

Organizing a village is similar to organizing a theme camp, but with a higher level of organization. While individual camps have their own groups and identities, a village has a larger unified identity that is shared by all camps within the village.

The village begins in the minds of those involved, grows through the collective effort of making it happen, lives in the glorious unpredictable chaos of life on the playa, and concludes with the aftermath of cleaning up and packing away everything you brought with you. But bringing together all of a village's personalities, ideas, and needs is no easy task.

When is the deadline for submitting the Placement Questionnaire?

The deadline for returning theme camps is Noon (12:00pm Pacific Time) on the last Thursday of March. The deadline for new camps is Noon (12:00 pm) Pacific Time on the last Thursday of April.

Once the deadline has passed, the questionnaire is electronically deactivated and no longer accepts submissions. To expedite your process, your camp's primary Placement contact should complete their Burner Profile well in advance. Don't put it off until the last minute!

In the questionnaire, who should I list as the camp leader?

The camp director is automatically identified as the Burner Profile who submits the questionnaire. This is the person who should be able to make decisions for your camp and answer questions about it. This person should be aware of who is camping with you and your overall camp vision, including camp layout and interactivity.

I sent in my Placement Questionnaire, but how do I know if they received it?

After you submit, your camp's primary Placement contact will receive a confirmation email with your questionnaire responses. Remember to check your spam folder!

How much fuel can we keep in our theme camp?

A camp may store no more than 110 gallons, or two 55 gallon drums, at one time. This excludes fuel in generators that meet safety radius requirements. You must follow all requirements for transportation and secondary containment of stored fuel, and you must be prepared to clean up any fuel spills that occur.
